Parking garage

Parking garages are often available in large cities for short-term or daily parking.

Parking decks are the different floors of the parking garage. There are also underground garages and elevated garages that cannot be reached at ground level. In order to use the parking garages, ramps are installed for entrances and exits. The most commonly used variant is the D’Humy system or split level system, where ascents and descents are offset from each other to save space. There are also parking garages with parking spaces on the ramps. The parking spaces are called parking ramps. In tower parking garages, the parking spaces are arranged on spiral parking ramps. Elevators are also installed in some parking garages. However, the operating and installation costs are high. Newer technologies also use fully automated parking garages in which the car is parked in a parking box and then conveyed into the parking garage. In some parking garages there are also staff who park the vehicle.

Technology in parking garages with cash register and video cameras

Many parking garages are equipped with a ticket payment system. The ticket is paid for later at a ticket office, depending on the parking time. When you want to leave the parking garage, the barrier opens again when the paid ticket is inserted into the machine. In most parking garages there are also parking spaces for the severely disabled, which can only be used by cars with a severely disabled pass. Some parking garages also offer parking spaces for mothers, children and women. The parking spaces are numbered and the various floors can be reached by elevator. Video cameras are used for security in parking garages. Women’s parking spaces are therefore also visible. Modern parking garages also display the occupancy rate so that drivers can see how many parking spaces are still available. In large cities, parking spaces can also be identified by a parking guidance system.

Development of the parking garages

The first parking garages were built in the USA. In Germany, the first parking garage was built in Berlin in 1913. Many parking garages were built after the Second World War. There are various large parking garage operators such as APCOA, Q-Park, Contipark and B+B-Parkhäuser. In some cities, they are also operated by the municipal utilities. Modern parking tickets can also be paid for by app.
