Digital parking systems

Brief explanation

The term “digital parking systems” describes parking systems for vehicles that generally function via automatic control using digital technology. The parking space of the vehicle is digitally recorded by the system and then moved using elevators and platforms to save space.

With the help of the digitally stored data, the user can call back the parking space at any time to collect the vehicle.

Detailed information

The colloquially used term “automated parking garage” does not adequately describe these parking systems.

A distinction must first be made between semi-automatic and fully automatic systems.

Both park vehicles using a system of platforms that serve as parking spaces. Using appropriate conveyor technology, these are moved and organized both vertically and horizontally in an efficient and space-saving manner. In principle, therefore, this is a special type of automated storage rack. The alternative term parking shelf for digital parking systems is therefore entirely appropriate.

While semi-automated systems are partly operated by the user, fully automated digital parking systems are self-contained. Access for users themselves remains restricted to the entrance area.

Variants

Very different systems can be installed depending on the intended use. In the area of semi-automated systems, there are double parker or lifting systems, sliding lifting systems, driver replacement systems or turntable systems.

So-called transfer systems do not have lifting devices and only work horizontally. Parking shelving systems are also available in various shapes, such as radial systems with a circular or aisle systems with a rectangular layout.

Possible applications

Digital parking systems offer advantages wherever a large number of vehicles need to be stored in a space-saving manner. Large residential and office buildings can benefit just as much as shopping centers and public buildings. Demand is naturally high, especially in city centers.

Saving space is only the most obvious advantage. Another, which is becoming increasingly important, is the reduced volume of traffic. Digital parking systems shorten the search for a parking space. The advantages of avoiding traffic jams and the associated positive consequences for energy consumption and the environment are obvious.
