The retractable parking space is a particularly elegant and space-saving parking solution for cars. As the name suggests, the parking surface can be lowered into the ground. The vehicle is thus parked invisibly, so to speak, and does not take up any space on the surface.

When the car is swallowed up by the ground

In a retractable parking lot, the parking area is located below ground level as a platform. It can be raised at the touch of a button using a hydraulic drive and is then at ground level. The vehicle is parked on the platform and the platform is lowered again. The roof of the retractable parking space then forms a flat surface with the ground again and can be used for other purposes or for parking another vehicle. The surface of the roof can be designed as desired so that it blends unobtrusively into the surroundings.

In principle, the system is also suitable for several vehicles stacked on top of each other, although this naturally increases the structural complexity and costs.

Suitability and advantages of the retractable parking space

Retractable parking spaces are generally suitable for public and commercial parking lots as well as for private use.

However, creating a retractable parking space is comparatively expensive and time-consuming, making it a rather exclusive parking solution, especially in private surroundings. The prerequisite is the creation of a sufficiently large and deep pit. Drainage devices and a water channel must ensure good protection against water ingress both from above and from the ground. A power connection is also required for the hydraulics.

The effort involved is offset by some clear advantages.

One of the most important factors is, of course, saving space. A retractable parking lot allows at least double the available space to be used.

However, aesthetics can also play a role, especially in the private sector, as neither the car nor the parking space are openly visible and a conventional garage can be dispensed with. Recessed parking is also a particularly secure parking solution in terms of theft or damage, as the vehicle is neither visible nor easily accessible.
